NSCC Advancement Requirements

Advancement from Recruit (E-1) to Apprentice (E-2)

Time In Rate:  3 Months as Recruit
Correspondence Courses:  Complete Basic Military Requirements (BMR)
Exam:  None
Required Training:  NSCC Recruit Training

NOTE: Cadets recruited early in the school year, who meet their 3 month Time In Rate requirement prior to attending Recruit Training, may be temporarily advanced to E2-T. Cadets may wear E-2 strips once advanced to E2-T but may not wear the stripes during Recruit Training. Cadets must have completed the BMR course to be advanced to E2-T. Time In Rate for E-3 starts on the date of advancement to E2-T.

Advancement from Apprentice (E-2) to Seaman / Airman / Fireman (E-3)

Time In Rate:  6 Months as Apprentice
Correspondence Courses:  Complete Seaman / Airman / Fireman
Exam:  None
Required Training:  Advanced Training

Advancement from Seaman (E-3) to Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4)

Time In Rate:  6 Months as Seaman
Correspondence Courses:  Complete PETTY OFFICER 3 & 2 (NAVEDTRA-14504)
Exam:  PO3
Required Training:  Advanced Training

Advancement from Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4) to Petty Officer 2rd Class (E-5)

Time In Rate:  6 Months as PO3
Correspondence Courses:  Complete PETTY OFFICER 3 & 2 (NAVEDTRA-14504)
Exam:  PO2
Required Training:  Advanced Training

Advancement from Petty Officer 2rd Class (E-5) to Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6)

Time In Rate:  6 Months as PO2
Correspondence Courses:  Complete PETTY OFFICER 1 (NAVEDTRA-14145)
Exam:  PO1
Required Training:  Advanced Training

Advancement from Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6) to Chief Petty Officer (CPO)

Time In Rate:  6 Months as PO1
Correspondence Courses:  Complete CHIEF PETTY OFFICER (NAVEDTRA-14144)
Exam:  None
Required Training:  Petty Officer Leadership Academy
